At a pre-ribbon-cutting press conference prior to the trade show\u2019s official opening, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCA chief events <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">officer Cindy Cohn\u00a0cited a presence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">271 exhibitors and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">called it<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cthe best-looking event we\u2019ve put on.\u201d Later, on the competition floor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/agarojewska\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agnieszka Rojewska<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Poland made history by becoming the first woman in the contest\u2019s 18-year existence\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to win<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the title of World Barista Champion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visitors to Amsterdam sometimes joke that they can\u2019t remember much from their trips to the famously live-and-let-live city, but these five WOC booths proved unforgettable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134287 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18MirageSlimJimB4KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kees van der Westen<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nothing lights up a Dutch coffee event like the indigenous splendor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/keesvanderwesten.com\">Kees van der Westen<\/a> brand, and everybody, from everywhere, was getting revved-up to see the debut of the Mirage <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/keesvanderwesten.com\/slim-jim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slim Jim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Presaged in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/kees-van-der-westen-93613.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a 2016 Sprudge interview with Kees van der Westen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> himself<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, this new espresso machine is \u201ckind of a mixture\u201d between others in the existing seQries, explained Yvette van der Westen, who oversees marketing for the company that her father heads. \u201cTechnically, visually, and price-wise, it will offer users an experience that falls somewhere between the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mirage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spirit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unlike the Mirage, the Mirage Slim Jim is a multiple-boiler machine. Available in a Douette or a Triplette configuration, the groups have been given plenty of love and attention, each having its own two-stage progressive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pre-infusion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cylinder, a shot timer, a thermometer, and a pressure gauge. Other features include a dual hot water temperature knob and a dual volumetric lever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134288 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18MirageSlimJimB2KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134291 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18MirageSlimJimA1KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Slim Jim Idrocompresso model shares many of the same specs as the standard Slim Jim, but its prominent lever group cylinders have been built to be fully encased in hot water. This produces \u201ca water cushioning effect which takes off a bit of the pressure and it won\u2019t hit you in the face,\u201d said Yvette, explaining that the lever on previous Idrocompresso models was susceptible to shooting up if a barista forgot to load the portafilter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All four prototypes showed unique details, including i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nterchangeable legs, front and side panels, cup rails, awnings, and knobs, plus various colors and room for customized logos. Still, they all shared a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nostalgic Americana automotive design sensibility, so much so that baristas might start pulling out their Pomade and poodle skirts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134286 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18MirageSlimJimCKarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following WOC, the Van der Westen family\u2014all members showed up, including Yvette\u2019s two sisters, now also her colleagues\u2014were due to cruise back to headquarters in Waalre. Their road map foresees a few more technical tweaks, a pre-production series, and finally, the Mirage Slim Jim\u2019s availability by early 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134279 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18QimaCoffeeFarisSheibani1KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Qima Coffee<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At WOC Amsterdam, the launch of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qimacoffee.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Qima Coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a London-headquartered company sourcing specialty beans from Yemen, was bittersweet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe\u00a0Yemen Coffee Revolution Starts Here\u201d read the slogan on the stand\u2019s backdrop, a lively mocha- and gold-toned illustration of Sana\u2019a\u2019s ancient skyline.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Helping lead that revolution is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faris Sheibani, a UK-born Yemeni who founded Qima in late 2016, seeking to do something for his parents\u2019 country of origin, where civil war has killed, wounded, and displaced thousands of people since early 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Booth-side, Sheibani and colleagues warmly received visitors, telling them <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">about Qima\u2019s debut collection. Some 800 smallholder farmers across northern and central Yemen produced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">about 250 coffee lots, which were<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cupped and scored by Dutchman-gone-Californian Willem Boot of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bootcoffee.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boot Coffee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For the expo, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cafekeppler.nl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cafe Keppler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> co-owner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/cafe-keppler-amsterdam-128454.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kees Kraakman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> roasted sample beans and praised Sheibani, a former SCA course student of his, for \u201chow he combines a moral cause with a commercial enterprise.\u201d Some farmers can now earn 20 times more income working for Qima, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brahim Boukadid, Qima\u2019s commercial manager in the Netherlands. He reported that 10% of profits get reinvested in the farmers\u2019 villages, supporting agriculture and education projects, though above all, he emphasized: \u201cWe want to give them hope with this coffee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134280 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18QimaCoffee_beansKarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attendees showed avid interest in Qima, suggesting its commercial prospects in Europe are real. Those glimmers of hope, however, were overshadowed by a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conspicuous absence: that of four Yemeni farmers and a Yemeni NGO worker who were expected to be part of the company\u2019s Amsterdam delegation. Their visa requests to visit the Netherlands were denied twice after what Sheibani described in an impassioned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/qimacoffee\/videos\/225027474762000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as an arduous, time-consuming, and humiliating application process filed via the Dutch embassy in Amman, Jordan. The visa denial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaraby.co.uk\/english\/news\/2018\/6\/8\/yemeni-farmers-denied-visas-to-netherlands-for-coffee-convention\">made headlines<\/a> and generated social media posts hashtagged #freeourfarmers. Qima has been outspoken about the decision\u2019s unjustness and its irony. In the same video, Sheibani stated: \u201cThe Dutch East India Company took\u2014smuggled\u2014seedlings from Yemen, coffee seedlings from Yemen, to Amsterdam to plant them in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/coffees-history-blooms-at-hortus-amsterdams-108875.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">botanical gardens in Amsterdam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, illegally. Four hundred two years later, we wanted to legally\u2026 together with the Dutch, celebrate coffee culture.\u201d Qima has since published a follow-up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/qimacoffee\/videos\/235880797010001\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, captioned as a \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">message of hope and coexistence from the farmers of Yemen to the people of the Netherlands and the world!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the time of writing, three of the farmers remain in Amman, Sheibani told Sprudge in an email shortly after he returned to the UK. He said that he is helping the farmers apply to other global coffee exhibitions so they can personally represent their coffees. \u201cIf they go back empty-handed, it would be a devastating blow to thousands of farmers following the events from Yemen and a significant setback to the Yemeni coffee industry in general,\u201d wrote Sheibani. The dauntless design duo from Austin, Texas, was selling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> wearables and wall art featuring their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sprudge.com\/filter-coffee-not-people-department-brewologys-merch-cause-115996.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Filter Coffee Not People<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> slogan, among others<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">been great, actually. We love coming to Europe,\u201d said company operations manager <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brett Cannon, when asked their reception outside the US. New items on show included two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BkTj0MHHPAZ\/?taken-by=departmentofbrewology\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">coffee blossom pins<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and mini-prints of their iconic illustrations commingling botanicals and barista tools. Company designer David <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salinas <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">also told Sprudge about a new campaign, expected to launch in the coming months. For it, the Department of Brewology is working with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelucyfoundation.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Lucy Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a New Zealand-based organization promoting greater visibility of people with disabilities in the coffee industry. In the same spirit that sees proceeds of the FCNP T-shirt going to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rstx.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Refugee Services of Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the new initiative will help raise funds for The Lucy Foundation. These designs are a collaboration between Floridian illustrator <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annacolemanillustration.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anna Coleman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Salinas, and will be anchored by their own slogan. Those words are not yet public, but the campaign is geared \u201cto really advocate for coffees that do good as opposed to just coffees that taste good,\u201d said Salinas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134292 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18HenkLangkemperLaMarzoccoRondineKarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Collezione Henk Langkemper <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not a booth but a veritable buffet table, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.henklangkemper.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Collezione Henk Langkemper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> snaked its way along one side of the trade floor\u2019s food court. On show were 25 vintage espresso machines and grinders manufactured between 1936 and 1972, and now belonging to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dutch coffee industry vet Henk <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Langkemper. His entire 110-piece collection of such relics is usually at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esw.nl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Espresso Service West<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, his three-decade-old coffee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">import and distribution company in The Hague that has become synonymous with supporting Dutch baristas in national and world competitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134294 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18HenkLangkemper_collection1KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Asked for his most cherished, Langkemper pointed to what he called \u201cany collector\u2019s favorite:\u201d the Rondine, described as the first La Marzocco one-group ever made, in 1953. The journey to get the machines to Amsterdam was tumultuous, said their owner: the idea began hatching at last year\u2019s WOC Budapest, was slowed down by uncertainty about where on the expo floor the display could be accommodated, got called off after Langkemper had a heart attack in November, and then by February, reignited when an ESW customer pledged to provide the display bars. Before long, friends of Langkemper, from Seattle to Hong Kong, pitched in to help restore the machines. And so there they\u2014and their owner\u2014stood, back in shiny working condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-134284 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18Pixels1KarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/b><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Coffee Pixels<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winning this year\u2019s Best New Product Competition in the category of food was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coffeepixels.com\/products\/coffee-pixels-cascara\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coffee Pixels Cascara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> one of two edible coffee bars being sold by Latvian cousins Raivis, Andris, and Gundars Vaitekuns. Former specialty cafe owners in Riga, the trio today forms <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the company <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Solid Coffee, which started <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">producing Coffee Pixels <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2017. Raivis described it as an idea born from necessity or, more precisely, withdrawal while traveling. Recounting instances when gas station or airplane coffee was their only option, he said they asked themselves \u201chow we can take the quality of experience and the values that we have in specialty coffee truly on the go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 10-gram bars are made from cocoa butter, Ethiopian coffee, coffee cherries, sugar, and salt. The \u201cMilk\u201d version contains 33 milligrams of caffeine and the winning \u201cCascara\u201d contains 50 milligrams, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the equivalent of approximately <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">30 milliliters of espresso. Sourced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamavarietals.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Panama Varietals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the cascara comes from Nicaragua, and its choice as an ingredient reflects \u201cthe other part of the drive to build this product,\u201d said Raivis, which is \u201cto really tackle the waste produced in the coffee industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_134281\" style=\"width: 1180px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-134281 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sprudge.com\/file\/2018\/06\/WOC18PixelsGundarsRaivisAndrisVaitekunsKarinaHof-1170x780.jpg\" alt=\"world of coffee amsterdam netherlands\" width=\"1170\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raivis, Andris, and Gundars Vaitekuns, founders of Coffee Pixels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another edible coffee benefit is that it \u201cwill be micro-dosing itself within your body,\u201d he said. Because the caffeine is in saturated fat, it takes longer for the body to absorb, with its effect lasting up to four hours, Raivis estimated. He also pointed out that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27979301\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cascara contains antioxidants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, so \u201cthis clean boost\u201d accompanies the caffeine kick. \u201cIt feels like you have more energy in the head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And no wonder WOC Amsterdam was full of superlative highs and yet, still so memorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Karina Hof is a Sprudge staff writer based in Amsterdam.
